History of the Minneriya Tank

The iconic Minneriya Tank is one such ancient creation. It is believed to have been built by King Mahasena who ruled the island between 276 and 303. The Minneriya Tank together with several other lakes and rivers in the region created a wonderful irrigation system that aided the ancient farmers in the region. The tank is the largest one built by King Mahasena who is said to have constructed 16 large tanks and two irrigation canals. The tank used to occupy 4670 acres! The water for the tank arrived from Amban River, which is a tributary of the great Mahaweli River.

The Minneriya National Park which is located in close proximity to the tank is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the island. Every year, during the dry season The Gathering occurs here. Bringing together a herd of close to 300 elephants to the banks of the Minneriya Reservoir.
