According to the Hindu epic Ramayanaya, King Ravana of Sri Lanka abducted Sita, the consort of Lord Rama of India. The reason for this abduction is unclear. Many say that Ravana sought revenge against Rama. As his sister Suparnika’s nose was sliced off by Rama and his brother Lakshmana. Some even say that Ravana was besotted by Sita’s surpassing beauty.

When the beautiful princess was brought to Sri Lanka, she was kept hidden in various parts of the island. The famous Ravana Cave, which you will find in Ella is one such place that is connected to the story. The princess was eventually discovered by Lord Rama’s armies which were led by monkey god Hanuman. In the battle that ensued, King Ravana lost his life as well.

The famous Ravana Cave lies 1,370 m (4,490 ft) above sea level on the foundation of a cliff. The cave is located 11 km (7 mi) away from Bandarawela.
