Mount Lavinia Hotel is one of the most regal buildings in the Western Coast of Sri Lanka. It was the residence of Sir Thomas Maitland, who served as the second British Governor of Ceylon.
The classy British official desired to create a mansion for himself in the famed town of Galkissa. He picked a site that overlooked the oceans as well. The new residence was built in the year 1806 complete with elegant rooms as well as entertainment facilities.
While enjoying the rich grandiosity of this majestic abode, Sir Thomas Maitland fell in love with a charming mestizo dancer named Lovina Aponsuwa, who came with his father’s dancing troupe to perform at the residence. The captivating beauty of this maiden mesmerized the governor. Her thick, black tresses and brilliant, hazel eyes made Sir Thomas Maitland fall deeper and deeper in love with her. Lovina Aponsuwa was half Sinhalese and half Portuguese. So her looks were truly quite unmatched.
