Story of the Temple
According to the Hindu epic Ramayanaya, King Ravana of Sri Lanka abducted Sita, the consort of Lord Rama of India and brought her to the island as his prisoner. The reason for this abduction is not very clear. Some say he was trying to take revenge from Rama and Laxmana for slicing off the nose of his sister. While others believe he was in love with Sita.
When Ravana brought Sita to the island, he kept her well hidden. Needless to say the armies of Rama were soon in the island, ready to wage war against the cruel king. The area where the armies of Rama gathered is the place that we call Ramboda today. In fact, Ramboda is a name that is derived from ‘Ram Padai’ which means the ‘Rama’s Force’.
The armies gathered upon the hills of the island in their numbers. They were guided and directed by the valiant monkey god, Hanuman. A brutal war eventually broke out which resulted in the death of Ravana.
Today, many millennia after these events, the legends of Ravana, Rama, Sita and Hanuman live on. The famous Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda is a testament to this fact.
