History of the Race Course in Nuwara Eliya

The Nuwara Eliya Race Course was created by John Baker back in the 1840s. He is therefore known to be the one who introduced horse racing to Nuwara Eliya. His intention was creating a training course for his imported English thoroughbreds.

The race course has a circumference of 1,800 metres with a 333 metre straight. Five horse racing events are held in the city of Nuwara Eliya in the month of April, which is the best time of the year to visit the city. These events bring together an elite group of horse lovers from all over the country and the delightful times that ensue are quite appealing for sure. Fashion shows take place on site during these events and the attendees also dress up very fashionably.

The Governor’s Cup is known to be the most prestigious event that takes place during this period. It was first contested back in the year 1833. The event takes place on the 14th of April, on the day of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Horse racing meets are also held in the months of August and December. Nescafe Cup, Sporting Times Trophy, Labookelle Cup, Upali Wijewardene Cup and Sunquick Cup are several other horse racing events that take place in the Nuwara Eliya Race Course.
