About Pilikuththuwa Raja Maha Viharaya

Pilikuththuwa Raja Maha Viharaya has recognized as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka. History said that the area that surrounds the temple inhabited during pre historic times too. The temple complex has 99 caves with drip ledges. This gives rise to speculation that the temple complex provided shelter to Sangha during 2nd and 3rd centuries. Today only 78 of these caves identified and they spread across an area of 200 acres.

Some historic records indicate that the famous King Valagamba who ruled in the island between 89 and 77 BC took shelter in this temple during the times of invasions which were carried out by South Indian kings.
