During the 2nd century BC, the waters of the ocean invaded the territories of man and submerged the city of Kelaniya in its brutal waves. The terrified locals knew not what to do. They assumed that this natural disaster was a work of angry gods. So in order to appease the gods, they decided to cast the beautiful daughter of King Kelani Tissa, into the raging waters on a golden vessel. Devi, the brave princess, was battling the ruthless ocean waves by herself before landing at a spot in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. She landed to a place which is located in Pottuvil. It is the place where the enchanting Muhudu Maha Viharaya is located. The beautiful princess who was given the name Viharamahadevi, married Kavan Tissa of the Rohana Kingdom in later years.
