Maligatenna Raja Maha Viharaya is a site of immense cultural, historic and religious value. According to folklore, King Valagamba used the temple as a hiding place, during the invasions of South Indian kings. It was also used during Portuguese period as a hiding place for the sacred relic of the tooth of Buddha.
