Kandy Esala Perahera 2024

Deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka, the Kandy Esala Perahera stands as a magnificent testament to centuries-old traditions. Dating back to the 4th century, this annual procession is held in the sacred city of Kandy to honor the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. Originally established by King Kirti Sri Rajasinha, it has since evolved into a grand festival that showcases the island’s vibrant folklore, ancient customs, and spiritual devotion.

The Kandy Esala Perahera is an eagerly anticipated event that spans several nights of captivating spectacle. The festivities traditionally commence with the Kumbal Perahera, which takes place over a period of ten nights. The procession begins around 7:00 p.m. and continues until the early hours of the morning, enchanting spectators with its dazzling display of beautifully adorned elephants, drummers, dancers, and fire performers.

The Kandy Esala Perahera follows a meticulously planned route, captivating the streets of Kandy with its grandeur. While the exact route may vary from year to year, the procession typically traverses through Dalada Veediya, Raja Veediya, and Sri Dalada Maligawa, the sacred temple that houses the revered tooth relic. As the procession moves along, it creates an awe-inspiring ambiance, immersing onlookers in the rich cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka.

The Kumbal Perahera marks the initial phase of the Kandy Esala Perahera. During this period, the sacred tooth relic is ceremoniously carried in a golden casket atop a lavishly adorned tusker. Accompanying the tusker are numerous traditional dancers, drummers, flag bearers, and devotees, all adding to the magical ambiance of the procession.

Following the Kumbal Perahera, the Randholi Perahera takes place. This phase of the procession features a larger number of elephants, elaborately decorated in vibrant garments and illuminated with mesmerizing lights. The rhythmic beats of drums reverberate through the night as traditional dancers and musicians showcase their talents, captivating the audience with their skillful performances.

The grand finale of the Kandy Esala Perahera is a culmination of the preceding nights’ splendor. Known as the Maha Randoli Perahera, this grand procession is the festival’s most spectacular and eagerly awaited event. It showcases a majestic parade of elephants, richly attired dancers, stilt walkers, acrobats, and an array of cultural performances. The final day perahera epitomizes the spirit of Kandy Esala Perahera, leaving spectators in awe of its magnificence.
