Sigiriya is a wonderful ancient palace built atop a 660 feet tall rock column. Located about 170 km North of Colombo and 56 km west of Polonnaruwa, this wonderful rock castle is a creation of king Kassapa(AD 477-495). Sigiriya is one of the most attractive historical sites in Sri Lanka and it is most famous for its stunning frescoes.

Minneriya National park is in the midst of three agricultural towns: Habarana, Polonnaruwa, and Minneriya. This is a heavenly area for elephants coming from the neighboring jungles to enjoy the lush grass fields on the banks of the Minneriya reservoir, especially during the dry season. Reports of elephant sightings range from 100 to a surprising 700.

At Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya (Lion’s rock) is an ancient rock fortress and ruins of a castle situated in the Matale District of Sri Lanka. It is a popular tourist destination and also popular for the ancient paintings (frescos) very similar to the paintings in Ajanta Caves of India. It was built during the reign of King Kashyapa (477 – 495 AD) is believed to have been painted in the fifth century AD. It is believed that there were paintings all over the rock which were later destroyed, only 22 still remaining. These paintings were later restored by a reputed Italian artist named Luciano Maransi. The frescoes are the only non-religious old paintings in Sri Lanka. En route to its summit of royal ruins, you will also encounter the Mirror Wall adorned with 7th century graffiti and the magnificent Lion’s Paw, which overawe any visitor to the original entrance of King Kashyapa’s aerial fortress. Thereafter proceed to Minneriya National Park.

Safari Stop

At Minneriya National Park

In the heart of the popular cultural triangle of Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park is mostly known for its incredible elephant migration, which is one of Asia’s finest wildlife experiences. During the drier months of June to September, as many as 300 elephants congregate in the Minneriya National Park around the ancient Minneriya water tank (which dates back to 3rd Century AD), taking advantage of the receding waters that provide an important water source. Covering an area of 8,890 hectares, Minneriya is around 4 hours from the capital city of Colombo and is close to other local attractions. The gathering of the elephants is a wildlife enthusiast’s joy and photographer’s dream. Small herds gather around the water tank, forming one giant mass of elephant grey. You may also catch sight of some of the other 24 mammals that make their home in the park, including toque macaque monkeys, spotted deer, sambar deer, wild buffalo, porcupine, wild boar and mongoose. Leopards are also found in the park, although less prolific than those found in Yala
