Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Viharaya is one of a most important temples in Kandy. The gorgeous frescoes which are found here make the temple quite a popular one for sure! The paintings of course, belong to the Kandyan Era. There are lots of unique things about these paintings which make them quite interesting. For example, the people, trees as well as the animals in the paintings are depicted in the same size. Only the front view of the people can be seen in these frescoes. The trees also bear a beautiful stylized form. The branches of the trees spread out to either sides of the trunk. Four artists should receive the credit for these gorgeous paintings. They are Nilagama Patabanda, Devaragampola Silvatänna, Kosvatte Hiriyale Naide and Devendra Mulachari.

The beautiful Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Viharaya seems to have been hollowed out of a large rock outcrop. A majestic rock shelter has therefore been created as well. The temple has a drumming hall, image house and a shrine room among other features. The temple is believed to have been built in the year 1771 during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe. It was built by his brother Rajadhi Rajasinghe who ascended the throne after him.
