Sigiriya, Dambulla Day Tour
Sigiriya and Dambulla, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, are two of Sri Lanka’s most treasured cultural landmarks. Sigiriya has even been named the 8th Wonder of the World, making this day tour a must-do for travelers. Starting at 6 am from your beach hotel, you’ll journey for about 4–5 hours to reach Dambulla Cave Temple. After exploring the temple, we recommend lunch at a restaurant suggested by our driver. Later, when the sun softens, you’ll continue to Sigiriya Rock Fortress before returning to your hotel.
Exploring Dambulla Cave Temple
The Dambulla Cave Temple, situated on a towering 160m rock, is an iconic site with a fascinating history. The rock spans over 1.5 km at its base and reaches a summit height of 550m. These caves served as a refuge for King Walagamba (Vattagamini Abhaya) during his 14-year exile. Upon reclaiming his throne in the 1st century BC, he built a grand rock temple here. This temple, designated a World Heritage Site in 1991, houses a mix of religious and secular art, including numerous reclining Buddha statues. In Cave 1, you’ll find a 15m-long statue of the dying Buddha and frescoes on walls and ceilings depicting Buddha’s life and Sinhalese history. The largest cave, Cave 2, contains over 150 statues, including depictions of Hindu deities Vishnu and Ganesh, showcasing the influence of Mahayana Buddhism.
Exploring Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Sigiriya, often called “Lion Rock,” is one of Sri Lanka’s premier eco-tourism sites and was named a World Heritage Site in 1982. The fortress was once entered through the jaws of a lion, with only its massive paws remaining today. Rising 600 feet above the flat landscape, Sigiriya’s distinctive rock with its flat summit spans nearly an acre, where King Kasyapa built his fortress complex. Today, ruins of this complex remain, showcasing an incredible feat of ancient architecture.
At the base of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, bird watchers can enjoy an excellent bird-watching site within the Sigiriya Sanctuary.

- Pick up from the beach hotel and transfer to Dambulla – Approximately 5-6 hours drive
- Visit Dambulla cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Lord Buddha’s life is painted on the walls of the cave which is believed to be done during the 2nd century.
- Lunch at a recommended restaurant
- Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress at 3.30 PM built by King Kashayapa as his palace during the 5th Century, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Transfer to the beach hotel – Approximately 5-6 hours drive
