Sinharaja Trekking Day Tour
Sinharaja Rain Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park in Sri Lanka, is perfect for nature enthusiasts. This day trip begins at 6 am from Your Beach Hotel, with a 2 ½ hour drive to reach the entrance. Once there, you can choose your preferred distance to explore based on your stamina. You can enjoy lunch after your trek, or our driver can arrange a picnic meal to enjoy amidst nature.
Sinharaja, meaning “Kingdom of the Lion,” is a biodiversity hotspot with international significance, recognized as a Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. This pristine lowland rainforest stretches about 21 km east to west and 7 km north to south, harboring a vast array of endemic species—from trees and insects to amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Unlike the dry-zone national parks like Yala, Sinharaja’s dense vegetation makes wildlife spotting challenging, though you might see the endemic Purple-faced Langur, along with rare sightings of leopards and elephants. Birds here often move in mixed feeding flocks, typically led by the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo and the Orange-billed Babbler. The forest is also home to 20 of Sri Lanka’s 26 endemic bird species, including the elusive Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, and Sri Lanka Blue Magpie.
Typical Itinerary
- Pick up from Your Beach hotel and transfer to Sinharaja Rain Forest – Approximately 2 ½ hour drive
- Take part in a trekking trip of 5 to 6 hours covering the most important areas of Sinharaja Rain Forest to see Birds such as Jungle Fowl, Brown Capped Babbler, Spot Wing Thrush, Skaly Thrush and Malabar Trogon and many other birds, Butterflies, and endemic plants. Sinharaja is a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. It is of international significance and has been designated a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
