About The Asgiri Maha Viharaya
The Asgiri Maha Viharaya, which is also known as Asgiriya Temple and Asgiriya Gedige. It is one of the most prominent Buddhist monasteries located in Sri Lanka. The temple serves as the headquarters of the Asgiriya Chapter of Siyam Nikaya. At present 565 temples located all over the country operate under the Asgiri Maha Viharaya of Kandy.
Commander Siriwardhana founded this majestic temple on the instructions and guidance of Parakramabahu IV of Kurunegala, is located near the Kandy Lake. The first buildings of the temple were located where Trinity College stands now.
The monks who resided in this temple throughout the years played important roles in safeguarding sacred tooth relic of Buddha. The monks in the temple kept the sacred relic in the care on many occasions. Their noble services were especially useful during times of political instability.
The majestic temple consists of three sections, namely ‘Purana Viharaya’ (Old Temple), ‘Meda Pansala’ (Middle Temple), ‘Aluth Viharaya’ (New Temple) and Gedige Vihara. The ‘Adahana Maluwa’ which is also a part of the temple complex is of immense prominence too. It was used as a cremation ground for the Royals.
